Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has overcome an impeachment motion that was filed against him by a section of MCAs in the county assembly. The motion, which accused the governor of abuse of office and mismanagement of public funds, failed to reach the two-thirds majority required to impeach the governor during a vote on Tuesday afternoon.

The motion was tabled on September 26, 2023, by Esise MCA Josiah Mang’era, who alleged that the governor had committed 12 counts of gross misconduct, including illegal recruitment of staff, non-remittance of statutory dues, favouritism and nepotism.

However, the governor challenged the motion in court, seeking to stop the assembly from debating or voting on it. He argued that the motion was defective and invalid and that it violated his right to fair administrative action. He also accused his rivals of having a political agenda to sabotage his development agenda and tarnish his name.

The MCAs then decided to proceed with the motion despite the court order and held a vote on Tuesday afternoon. However, they failed to attain the two-thirds majority required to impeach the governor, as only 16 MCAs voted in favour of the motion while 18 MCAs voted against it.
